Winter Apple Musings

ishqgardens

Pruning an apple tree on a winter day that felt too much like spring, I couldn't believe the warmth of the air on Jan 13. Some of the buds near the top of the tree were threatening to make an early appearance - a grave idea this time of year. One day ago, snow covered my lawn completely; now all the green brown grass is back. It will be covered again before too long. There's little consistency with this Colorado weather and yet there is - sometimes the movement is subtle, at other times dramatic. It's one of the things that keep it interesting. In two hours of fine pruning atop the apple, the sky had darkened and the temperature dropped. The breezes made overtures about bringing big gusts and more wind, but nothing came of it during the day. We think we're so smart - controlling this, limiting that, making the earth "a better place" - but really we just do our best, while we're here, to approximate and bear witness to God's glory, an event from which we are not separate as much as we may think. With that in mind, I continue to prune, knowing that God knows best and I am playing my little part.
